JDS is the top-ranked dairy research journal in the world. The Institute for Scientific Information's impact factor has ranked JDS one of the top three in the agriculture, dairy, and animal sciences category for six straight years. In 2007, Journal of Dairy Science became the top-ranked journal of 44 journals in the agriculture, dairy, and animal sciences category, with an impact factor of 2.284 (2006 data).

In 2007, the Journal of Dairy Science was ranked No. 1 by eigenfactor. Eigenfactors are used to rank over 6000 journals in terms of cost-effectiveness.
