JDS is a calendar year subscription: JDS Online service begins January 1 and ends December 31.

JDS is the top-ranked general dairy research journal in the world. The Institute for Scientific Information's impact factor has ranked JDS one of the top five in the agriculture, dairy, and animal sciences category for seven straight years.

In 2007, the Journal of Dairy Science was ranked No. 1 by eigenfactor. Eigenfactors are used to rank over 6000 journals in terms of cost-effectiveness. JDS was ranked No. 1 in the Agriculture, Dairy and Animal Science category and No. 2 in the Food Science and Technology category. Recent volumes of JDS have grown to include more than 500 manuscripts and 5,000 pages per year from authors worldwide.

In 2007, all journal issues back to volume 1 (1917) were made available online. Online access provides several features not available with the print subscription, including online-only publication of Joint Annual Meeting abstracts and symposia papers, and free color figures and data supplements in JDS.
