An external closed inlet device analyzer was used to determine the binding affinity of methyl ketones to delipidated milk protein powder. Difficulties in replicating peak size and peak retention on triplicate sample runs were experienced. After a series of tests on the analyzer, it was evident the silicone septa were binding the carbonyls. Septa were removed and replaced with stainless steel Swagelok fittings and graphite ferrules. A sample tube was put in the heating chamber, purged, and the methyl ketones quantified. Triplicate runs gave excellent replication of both peak size and retention times.

Key Words: external closed inlet device analyzer • methyl ketone binding affinity • delipidated milk protein
