Northeast Section American Society of Animal Science Northeast Branch American Dairy Science Association 1989 Outstanding Young Scientist Award

R. Dean Boyd was born September 25, 1950 in Flagler, Colorado. He received a B.S. degree (1973) from Colorado State University and the M.S. (1977) and Ph.D (1979) degrees from the University of Nebraska. After completing his Ph.D., Boyd joined the faculty of the Department of Animal Science, Cornell University, where he is currently Associate Professor of Animal Nutrition and Metabolism.

Boyd has a national reputation for the originality and quality of his research in swine. In the area of "improving baby pig survival", Boyd and his associates have used a multifaceted approach. He has conducted a series of studies related to the metabolic regulation of fetal energy storage and demonstrated that fetal glucose stores could be manipulated by supply of specific nutrients to the pregnant sow.
