ABSTRACT
These are the brief remarks I made at the ADSA Awards Program on August 2, 1989 during our joint meeting with the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS). Next year we will return to a more traditional program format and the President will make a more formal address during the Opening Session.
The combined meeting with ASAS was a tremendous meeting, which required facilities such as the hotel complex around the Rupp Arena and use of University of Kentucky facilities nearby. Our Program Committee accepted 1490 abstracts and incorporated them into the program. This compares with 635 ADSA and 784 ASAS papers at our individual meetings last year (total of 1419). Each year we keep breaking previous records for number of papers presented. Published pages in the Journal of Dairy Science also keep increasing, reaching an all-time high of 3617 pages in 1988 versus a previous 4-year average of 3142. Why have our members increased participation in our annual meeting year by year and increased publishing in our journal?
