Emeritus Professor Robert P. Niedermeier, Chairman of the University of Wisconsin Dairy Science Department for 21 years, died on May 20, 1989 at age 70. Niedermeier was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin and his associations with UW-Madison spanned a total of 49 years.
He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from UW-Madison, served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1946, which included 1 year of training at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He served 3 years in the Pacific and survived the 1945 sinking of the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Bismarck. While on survivor's leave, he married Edna Baumann of Edgar, Wisconsin. He was appointed as an Instructor in Dairy Science in 1947, was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1949, Associate Professor in 1951, Full Professor in 1956, and Chairman of the Department in 1963, a position he held until his retirement in 1984.
Niedermeier's career included teaching, research, and extension activities.
