Awards and Honors...
Lewyllen S. Mix was the recipient of the 1988 Distinguished Service Award of the Northeast Branch American Dairy Science Association-Northeast Section American Society of Animal Science. Born December 22, 1921, Mix was reared on the family owned dairy farm at Heuvelton, St. Lawrence County, New York. After serving in the US Army he graduated from the New York State College of Agriculture at Cornell in 1946 with a B.S. degree in animal science and a minor in agricultural economics. He was awarded a Ph.D. in dairy science from the University of Minnesota in 1952 under the guidance of W. E. Peterson. As a graduate student he managed the University dairy herd for 3 years and coached the University Dairy Cattle Judging Team for 4 years.
He joined Beacon Milling Company, Cayuga, New York as Director of Dairy Research in 1952. During a 14-year career with Beacon he coauthored three editions of the book Profitable Dairy Management, which was used as a text and reference by many 2-year agricultural colleges and high schools in the Northeast.
