Memorial—John Alvin Newlander

ABSTRACT

John A. Newlander, teacher and scientist at the University of Vermont for 38 years, died March 18, 1987. He was born in Pennyan, New York on January 18, 1891. He received the B.S. degree at Cornell University in 1919 and the M.S. at the University of Vermont in 1921. In 1938 he received his Ph.D. at Cornell University. Returning to Vermont, he was promoted to associate professor. It was not until his late academic years that he was promoted to professor by a newly appointed department head who recognized his outstanding accomplishments.

Newlander was a cooperative, competent, versatile scientist committed to team research. He worked with H. B. Ellenberger, O. M. Camburn, and E. F. Jones. Their long-time experiments with calcium and phosphorus utilization by the dairy cow in as many as seven lactations, including numerous analysis of nutrient intake and digestion trials, were published in technical bulletins. John developed methods for improvement and preservation of grass silage.
