ABSTRACT
Chancellor Meyer, Dean Hess, Professor Touchberry, Professor Schweigert, Professor Price, Members of the American Dairy Science Association, and guests, the American Dairy Science Association is pleased to meet at a university that has an outstanding tradition and reputation in the agricultural and biological sciences. We are also grateful to you, the faculty and staff of this institution, for hosting this meeting. My previous experiences assure me that California hospitality will make this a memorable week.
I would like to open this presidential address by posing a question that is probably presumptuous and undoubtedly provocative. Should the American Dairy Science Association be abolished? Before you have the Davis police force take me away or before you bring in the people in the long white coats, please let me continue and expand upon that question.
Eliminating, modifying, and streamlining existing structures is, of course, in fashion at the present time. Newly formed agencies and organizations tend to have sunset clauses built into their charters.
