Professor Lester Earl Casida was born in Chula, Missouri, April 9, 1904. He died in Madison, Wisconsin on July 13, 1986. He was married to Ruth Barnes in 1927. He is survived by his wife, their three children, Lester Earl, Jr.; John Edward; and Betty Ruth (Mrs. Robert Alien Damerau); seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Casida earned a B.S. degree in education at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in 1926, an A.M. in 1927, and a Ph.D. in 1932 at the University of Missouri.
Casida started teaching in a rural school in Grundy County, Missouri, at 18 years of age (1922) and continued until 1924. He was acting professor of biological science at Arizona State Teachers College, 1929 to 1930 and acting professor of agriculture at Arkansas State Teachers College, 1930 to 1931. He held a National Research Council fellowship at the University of Wisconsin, 1932 to 1934, and he joined the faculty of the Genetics Department as assistant professor in 1934.
