Since its founding in 1867, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a comprehensive state-supported Land-Grant institution, has earned a reputation for excellence in teaching, research, and service. The University ranks among the world's great universities. A recent survey of 600 college and university presidents ranked the University the third best public university and eighth best public or private university in the United States. In recent rankings agriculture and numerous other programs have been included in the top 10 in the United States. The University's historic excellence can be traced to a faculty of exceptional quality, talented students, dedicated administrative leaders, and to the people of Illinois who have supported research, teaching, and service at their university.
Approximately 35,000 students from the United States and international countries, including about 7,600 graduate students, enroll in programs offered by 21 schools and colleges. About 88% of the entering freshmen rank in the top 25% of their high school classes.
