Memorial—Robert McLaughlin Whitney

ABSTRACT

Robert McL. Whitney, a prominent member of the Food Science Department faculty at the University of Illinois, died April 24, 1985, at Vista Hills Medical Center in E1 Paso, Texas, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on March 12, 1985. The accident occurred while Whitney and his wife, Ruth, were vacationing in Texas. Mrs. Whitney was also injured in the accident but has since recovered.

Whitney was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, September 28, 1911. In 1936 he received the B.A. degree in chemistry from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and he remained there for an additional year as an instructor in mathematics. After serving as head of the science departments at Harvey, North Dakota, and Cairo, Illinois, high schools, he enrolled in the Graduate College at the University of Illinois and earned the degree of Ph.D. in physical chemistry in 1944. Prior to joining the Dairy Technology faculty at University of Illinois he worked as an assistant chemist in the Illinois State Water Survey; instructor in chemistry, University of Illinois; and research chemist for Dean Foods Co., Rockford, IL.
