Retirement. . .
Edward W. Custer retired May 31, 1985, from the position of professor of dairy manufacturing at Mississippi State University following a distinguished 38-year career. He received his B.S. degree from Mississippi State University in dairy manufacturing in 1947 and remained in the department as dairy plant superintendent and instructor. In 1954 he was promoted to assistant professor and advanced through the ranks to professor. He earned his M.S. degree in dairy manufacturing from Mississippi State University in 1965. Through the years, he taught most of the courses offered in dairy manufacturing, conducted research, and served as consultant to the dairy industry in Mississippi, the Southeast, and the nation.
Evidence of his teaching success is the record his teams made in the Southern Regional and International Dairy Products Evaluation Contests. He coached teams that competed in 18 Southern Regional contests (over a 25-year period). They won first place in all-products competition 12 times, second place 3 times, third place once, and fifth place twice.
