ABSTRACT

James T. Miles, head of the Department of Food Technology and Science at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, will retire June 30 after 27 years with the university.

As department head since 1972, he directs a diverse department of 10 teaching and research faculty and three Extension specialists. He was head of the Dairy Department from 1960 until organization of the new Department of Food Technology and Science.

Miles received a bachelor's degree in dairying and a master's degree in dairy husbandry and agromony from the University of Tennessee. He received a decorate in dairy cattle nutrition and biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin.

His honors include the Webster Pendergrass Award, the Gamma Sigma Delta Alumni Award, and Professional Merit Award. Miles is active in the Institute of Food Technologists, the American Dairy Science Association, and the American Society of Animal Science. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, and Gamma Sigma Delta.
