ABSTRACT

Retirement. . .

Following a long and most distinguished career, James F. Cavanaugh has announced his retirement from The American Jersey Cattle Club (AJCC) and National All-Jersey Inc. (NAJ), effective July 1, 1985. He will be succeeded by Maurice E. Core, AJCC assistant secretary and treasurer of both AJCC and NAJ.

Cavanuagh joined the AJCC in 1947, leaving the Hoard's Dairyman editorial staff to become AJCC assistant secretary. He later served as acting editor of the Jersey Journal when it was started in October 1953. He was named executive secretary October 20, 1956, the position he has held for the past 28 years, the longest tenure in AJCC history. He has also been executive secretary of NAJ since its incorporation in 1957.

His leadership of the Jersey organizations has brought the breed to a position of strong second among the dairy breeds in this country. His continued emphasis on increasing the profitability of Jerseys has helped bring about a dramatic increase in the production level of Jersey cattle beginning with the AJCC's adoption of USDA Sire Summaries in 1968 as the official method of ranking Jersey sires.
