Frank E. Potter, professor of dairy science and food technology, has retired after 30 years at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Potter taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in the university's Department of Food Science and Nutrition. In addition, he played a major role in the teaching programs of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture and received the Stockbridge Outstanding Teaching Award in 1974. He was also recognized by the Future Farmers of America in 1978 for his contributions to undergraduate education.
Potter's research centered on dairy products, especially ice cream. More recently, he has researched rapid, on-farm production of cheese as part of a cooperative venture with the university's Department of Food Engineering. Before coming to the university, Potter taught at Texas A&M for 3 years. He also worked for the US Department of Agriculture as a research technologist. Potter received his B.S. from the University of Maine, his M.S. from the University of Maryland, and his Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University.
