Storage Stability of Canola-Based Protected Lipid Feed Supplement and Its Effect on Characteristics of Milk and Butter

ABSTRACT

"Protec",3 a canola-based protected lipid feed supplement, became highly oxidized when stored at elevated temperatures (40°C) for extended periods (12 wk). Effects of feeding this oxidized product to dairy cows were evaluated in diets containing no Protec, 6% fresh Protec, and 6% oxidized Protec. Four Holstein dairy cows in late lactation were fed one of the three diets for 3 wk. Milk from the four cows fed each diet was combined and processed at the end of the feeding period. Feeding the oxidized Protec produced no off-flavors or oxidative instability in the milk and butter. Both protected lipid feed supplements exhibited a butter-softening effect; however, decrease of butter hardness was less pronounced for the oxidized Protec than for the fresh material.
