ABSTRACT

Awards and Honors...

Anne W. Powel, has been named winner of Dairy Shrine's 1984 Student Recognition Contest. The contest is designed to recognize dairy science college students who, upon graduation, plan to work closely with dairy cattle. There were 28 contestants from 28 universities and colleges.

Powell received a $500 cash award November 5, at the Dairy Shrine annual awards banquet held during the North American Livestock Exposition, Louisville, KY.

Powel graduated in June 1984 with a B.S. degree in dairy science from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg. This fall she will begin graduate studies in reproductive physiology with Robert Foote at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.

Powell has lived on a dairy farm all of her life, and her family co-owns Unicorn Associates, Inc., a registered Guernsey and Holstein farm near Union Bridge, MD. Her farm involvement has including raising calves, working with the show string, and milking.

An active 4-H member for 10 years, Powel began judging dairy cattle when she enrolled in 4oH. In 1979 she was a member of the Maryland team at the National 4-H Contest; the team placed second and she was sixth high individual overall and in reasons.
