ABSTRACT

UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN

"Whatever may be the limitations which trammel inquiry elsewhere, we believe that the great State University of Wisconsin should ever encourage that continual and fearless sifting and winnowing by which alone the truth may be found." This statement adopted by the Board of Regents in 1894 even today reflects the University's support of academic freedom. Since its establishment in 1848, the University of Wisconsin has nurtured this concept to become one of the world's leading institutions of higher education. Granting majors in 152 bachelor's, 187 master's and 118 doctoral degree programs, University of Wisconsin-Madison annually attracts more than 42,000 students. In a recent survey by the National Science Foundation, research expenditures in University of Wisconsin-Madison's 13 schools and 129 academic departments ranked second in the nation. The University currently is investigating more than 5,000 research projects. In a survey of more than 4,000 professors at four year colleges, University of Wisconsin-Madison ranked eighth among the nation's leading institutions in faculty quality. Highest ratings for the University were second in agriculture and third in biological sciences.
