ABSTRACT

From a university perspective, we educators have the responsibility of seeing that our undergraduate students are trained for the next step in their educational development. In many cases this is the job market. The challenge is probably greater today than in the past because a higher percentage of our students have no experience or only limited experience in dairy production or dairy manufacturing. Many departments have initiated programs whereby their students can gain work experience as a supplement to their traditional university education. Other departments are in the process of organizing such programs. The purpose of this symposium is to peruse some methods that are being used to help undergraduate students gain work experience. Administrators of these programs in universities and industries as well as recent participants of such programs will provide insights about such programs.

Definitions are needed to help set forth the distinguishing features of the programs that will be discussed.
