Technique for Partitioning Sire Evaluations

L. R. Schaeffer

Department of Animal and Poultry Science, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada N1G 2W1

ABSTRACT

A technique is described for partitioning sire evaluations into contributions from each factor of the linear model by manipulation of mixed model equations. The results allow for a detailed scrutiny of each bull's evaluation as well as means of assessing overall trends. This technique could give researchers more realization for what happens with best linear unbiased prediction procedures as well as point to potential problems of the data. The technique is illustrated with type trait evaluations of Canadian Holstein sires.
