Eric W. Swanson, professor of animal science at the University of Tennessee, died Saturday, February 12, 1983, of an apparent heart attack.
Swanson was born June 14, 1918, in Knox County, Indiana. He graduated in 1939 from Purdue University with a B.S. in dairy production. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Missouri in 1940 and 1943, respectively. He served in the US Army from 1944 to 1946 as instructor and nutritionist. Swanson then joined the faculty of the University of Tennessee in 1947 as an assistant professor with teaching and research responsibilities.
Swanson developed an international reputation for research in nutrition of lactating cows and growing heifers in thyroid and mammary physiology, and in earlier years, for research in the area of artificial insemination with particular emphasis on semen processing.
Swanson was awarded the local Gamma Sigma Delta Chapter's Research Merit Award in 1969 and 1977.
