Memorials — Erle E. Bartley

ABSTRACT

Erie E. Bartley was stricken with a fatal heart attack in his office on February 10, 1983, and died shortly after his arrival at the hospital.

Erie Bartley was a scientist of international stature. He lectured and consulted at prestigious institutions in England, France, and Sweden. His former graduate students hold responsible academic positions as well as performing similar roles in industry. During his career he published over 100 scientific papers on ruminant nutritition.

Perhaps he was best known for his contribution to the solution of ruminant bloat problems around the world. His research on legume bloat culminated in the development of poloxalene, the most effective and widely-sold bloat preventive, known in the feed industry as Bloat Guard®. More recently, his research on lascalocid, an ionophore antibiotic, as a control of feedlot bloat led to the commercial introduction of Bovatec®.

He contributed significantly to the understanding of ammonia utilization in the rumen and probably conducted more ammonia toxicity trials than any other scientist.
