Robert M. Whitney — scholar, teacher, and research chemist - retired in August 1982 from the Department of Food Science, University of Illinois, Urbana, after 36 years of devoted service. He came to the Division of Dairy Technology in 1946 with a superior scholastic preparation for the distinquished career that followed.
After graduation with a B.A degree from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD in 1936, Whitney for the next four years taught, first, college mathematics and then science in high school.
To increase his opportunities and broaden his perspectives, Whitney enrolled as a graduate student in the Department of Chemistry, University of Illinois, Urbana, in 1940 and was awarded a Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry in 1944. During the last two years of his thesis research, 1942 to 1944, Whitney was an instructor of physical chemistry, colloid chemistry, and chemistry of water treatment.
In 1946, after 2 years as a research chemist for Dean Milk Co., Rockford, IL, Whitney returned to the University of Illinois as associate professor of dairy technology.
