ABSTRACT
Pressed brewers' grains were substituted for ground corn and soybean meal at 0, 20, 30, and 40% of ration dry matter and fed to 20 lactating dairy cows in a 4 x 4 Latin square. periods were 4 wk with data collection during last 2 wk.
Dry matter intake was suppressed on 40% pressed brewers' grains diet, but 4% fat-corrected milk yield was the same for all diets. Apparent increase in efficiency of conversion of energy to milk by the cows on the higher brewers' grains can be explained by greater losses of body weight by cows on these diets. At 40% of dry matter intake, the pressed brewers' grains resulted in a higher molar proportion of rumen acetate and lower molar proportion of propionate. No effects were apparent on dry matter or crude protein disappearance from dacron bags suspended in the rumen of cows receiving the four diets. Water kinetics in the cows were not affected greatly by the diets except as influenced by difference in dry matter intake.
