ABSTRACT
Four teat dips formulated at different concentrations of iodine were evaluated by experimental challenge with Staphylococcus aureus (Newbould 305). Teat dip, iodine contents, and efficacies were: 1) .1, .3, and .5%; 73.0, 70.8, and 74.9%; 2) .25 and .5%; 55.8 and 64.6%; 3) .1 and .5%; 74.8 and 70.0%; and 4) .05, .1, .25, and 1.0%; 79.5, 82.6, 80.7, and 94.4%. Products with low concentration iodine were highly effective in reducing incidence of Staphylococcus aureus infections with no significant differences within formulation from iodine content. The experimental challenge model provided an efficient method for evaluating efficacy of postmilking teat dips.
