J. L. Lush, Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agriculture, professor of animal science, and member of the National Academy of Science, died at the age of 86 after an extended illness. Lush received his B.S. and M.S. degrees at Kansas State University and his Ph.D. degree at the University of Wisconsin in 1922. He was a member of the faculty of Texas A&M University until he joined the faculty at Iowa State University in 1930. Lush pioneered development of the application of population genetics to the improvement of livestock or animal breeding. The graduate students trained, some 170, and their students have carried Lush's influence over the entire world, resulting in improved utilization of resources in food production. Lush has been widely recognized with many awards and honorary degrees. He received die National Medal of Science from the President of the United States in 1968.
