ABSTRACT

Efficacy of a .5% quaternary ammonium teat dip under natural exposure to mastitis pathogens was 77.1% against Staphylococcus aureus and 18.0% against Streptococcus species of environmental origin. Incidence of coliform and Pseu-domonas aeruginosa infections was too low for valid evaluation. All coliform infections occurred during the last month of the trial and were traced to damp sawdust bedding in freestalls. The product did not reduce infections with Micrococcus species but yielded an efficacy of 71.2% against Corynebacterium bovis.
