ABSTRACT

Weight gains of litters of albino mice were measured between the 5th and 12th days of lactation. Young born to each mouse remained until the end of the 4th day when numbers of young were reduced to three, six, or nine. Observations were over five lactations.

As number of young per litter increased from three to nine, weight gains per litter increased from 12.2 to 21.1 g, but weight gains per pup decreased from 4.1 to 2.4 g. Weight gains of litters of equal size among different lactations were similar although it appeared that for nine young weight gain of litter in the first three lactations increased and was constant in subsequent lactations. Average weight gains per pup of litters with nine pups were 2.1, 2.4, 2.7, 2.4, and 2.7 in lactations 1 to 5.
