ABSTRACT

Retirement...

William N. Patterson retired August 1 as extension dairy specialist at Virginia Tech.

Patterson received both his bachelor's degree in agricultural education and his master's degree in dairy husbandry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. The 61-year-old dairy scientist came to Virginia Tech in 1953 as extension specialist in 4-H dairy youth programs. In 1963, he transferred to the position of dairy production records specialist. He has had major responsibility for developing and promoting the Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) in Virginia. Patterson recalled the growth in record use saying, "Participation in DHIA has grown from 20 to 30% to almost 65% of all Grade A Herds in the state." Virginia dairymen show an above-average usage rate of computer-assisted management programs and have one of the top percentages of cows on DHIA test programs in the nation.

Patterson's on-farm herd book clinics have brought him into contact with hundreds of Virginia dairymen.
