It is my pleasure to present a special award at this time. It is clearly in keeping with the spirit and enthusiasm associated with our commemorating this, the 75th anniversary year of ADSA.
The recipient of our "special" award is indeed a "special" person. He was reared in Van Buren County, Iowa, and holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from Iowa State College (now Iowa State University), and a Ph.D. from Cornell University. He began his illustrious professional career as a teacher with a starting salary of $46.20 — not per day, not per week — but rather $46.20 per month.
He served on the dairy faculty at the University of West Virginia for 5 years before joining the dairy manufacturing faculty of Michigan State University in 1928. I first met him 30 years ago through his textbooks. In keeping with his high standards of excellence, they were well done.
He joined the American Dairy Science Association nearly 60 years ago.
