LSU in Baton Rouge is one of seven institutions that comprise the LSU system, a statewide network of higher education, with eight campuses in five Louisiana cities.
As a state institution and a statewide system, LSU has had its purpose defined by law as well as tradition: to develop to the highest level the intellectual and professional capacities of Louisiana citizens; to enrich instruction and establish new frontiers of knowledge; and to provide Louisianians with information useful in advancing the state's economy and culture. LSU accomplishes these missions through its programs of instruction, research, and service.
The oldest and largest institution in the LSU system — and one of the oldest state universities in the South — LSU in Baton Rouge opened in 1860 as a small military academy in Pineville, Louisiana. Its first superintendent was, ironically, a man who was to lead Union forces against the South in Civil War scarcely three years later: General William Tecumseh Sherman,
