Arthur R. Porter, emeritus professor of Dairy Science, Iowa State University, died July 7, 1981, at the age of 78 from complications following surgery. Porter was born on a farm near Weavertown, NY, and he graduated from high school just before his 16th birthday. A few years later he completed the winter course in agriculture at Cornell University and answered an advertisement for a DHIA supervisor in Blackhawk County, IA. Following 2 years service to dairymen in that area, he enrolled at Iowa State College in dairy production.
Art Porter was an exceptional student and an outstanding student leader. He graduated in 1931 with a degree in dairy husbandry. He served as manager of the famous Iowana Holstein Farms in Scott County for 4 years and then returned to Iowa State College as extension dairyman in 1935. He served the university continuously from that time except for a year spent at the University of Minnesota where he earned the Master of Science degree.
