Memorial — Samuel A. Hinton

ABSTRACT

Samuel A. Hinton died June 15, 1981, at his home in Knoxville, TN. He had been in steadily failing health since suffering a stroke about eight months before his death. He was 77 years old. He had retired from the University of Tennessee Dairy Department January 1, 1972, after serving there for 44 years. He was also retired from the Holstein-Friesion Association GEM program which he served for about 7 years.

At the time of his retirement from teaching, Sam Hinton was the "Dean" of college coaches of dairy cattle judging teams. He coached Tennessee teams for about 40 years. Many of his students were national champion judges in single breeds as well as overall and he produced a share of national champion teams. His teams were consistently well trained in presenting reasons for their placings. This facility was imparted to them from Hinton's long personal involvement in managing, breeding, and showing cattle.
