ABSTRACT

Introduction

A review of dairying internationally involves a myriad of complexities. A diversity of production systems has evolved during the process of adapting to local environments. Although dairy cattle dominate the world's industry, other species warrant recognition as important suppliers because of their superior adaptability to certain regions. Customs and lifestyles have a strong influence on utilization patterns. Economic forces and governmental policies affecting all levels of the industry compound complexities. Recent phenomenal increase in communication and travel has brought the world's people much closer together, with both good and bad consequences. Modern technologies are having a worldwide impact on the dairy industry.

Our objective in this review is to untangle some of the interwoven threads of international relationships in order to better understand the world's dairy industry. We include examples that illustrate how the US has both contributed to and gained from progress of the industry in other countries.
