ABSTRACT
Increasing specialization and stability of milk supply characterize the last 25 yr of dairy production in the United States. Fewer farms, larger herds, and more production per cow are continuing trends. There is a geographic centralization of dairy farming in the Lake States, northeastern United States, and California. Herd size on the average farm will triple and an increase of 25% in production per cow is a conservative estimate in the next 25 yr.
In 2006, as in 1980, the dairy cow will continue to provide milk and milk products for everyone. Research and adaptation of the technology developed by research will be essential to continue improvement of productive efficiency.
