Memorial — Herbert Perry Davis

ABSTRACT

Herbert Perry Davis, 91, died February 15, 1981, in Evanston, IL. Many former College of Agriculture students and friends remember him as "H. P.", the chairman of the Dairy Husbandry Department at the University of Nebraska from 1921 until 1949. He relinquished the chairmanship in 1949 to devote more time to research and writing publications. Davis retired from the University on June 30, 1957, after 36 years of distinguished service to it. In 1965 he moved from Lincoln to Kenilworth, IL.

During his extensive research in the field of dairy husbandry, he greatly furthered the understanding of how body measurements help ascertain growth in animals. In a research bulletin compiled by Davis and I. L. Hathaway, a report was given of comparative measurements of the University of Nebraska dairy herd in conjunction with a long growth study of females of Holstein, Ayrshire, Guernsey, and Jersey breeds. These two researchers also published the research bulletin entitled, "Growth Measurements of Holstein Females from Birth to Seven Years."
