Estimating Lactating Projection Factors as Joined Straight Lines

G. R. Wiggans

Animal Improvement Programs Laboratory, Science and Education Administration, US Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, MD 20705

ABSTRACT

A method to construct factors for projecting milk and fat records is presented. Unknown production is estimated from last sample-day and herd-average data. Factors for these variables vary linearly with days in milk within stage of lactation. The curve of these factors is continuous between stages.

Records are projected by addition of the known partial-record production to an estimated remaining production (production from the last day of the partial record until day 305). This estimate is based on last sample-day production and, for records through 155 days, mature-equivalent herd average.
