ABSTRACT
Addition of sodium hydroxide to solutions containing lactose and manganese (II) chloride precipitated insoluble manganese hydroxide and lactose as a complex or adduct. Maximum lactose precipitation occurred at molar ratios sodium hydroxide to manganese chloride 2.0 and manganese chloride to lactose 4.0 with 55% yield. Apparent oxidation of manganese(II) did not affect the amount of lactose precipitated. Analysis by response surface methodology confirmed the location of the maximum but was unable to elucidate the precise nature of the relationship between variables. The amount of complex and lactose precipitated may be a function of the relative insolubility of the metal hydroxide and the solubility of the adduct.
