John L. Barnhart, a retired University of Idaho professor of food science, died November 5, 1980, at the Good Samaritan Village in Moscow. He was 72.
Barnhart began his career at the UI in 1934, left in 1940, and returned in 1956. He was head of the Food Science Department during the 1970–71 school year and retired in 1974.
Barnhart was born to George and Agnus Barnhart in Greensburg, PA, on September 20, 1908. He was a graduate of Pennsylvania State University. He earned his master's degree from West Virginia University and his doctorate from Pennsylvania State in 1940.
He was an instructor at Oklahoma A&M University and Kansas State College during the 1940's and was the dean of agriculture at Delaware Valley College of Agriculture in Pennsylvania from 1947 to 1949.
He was chairman of the dairy department at Temple University from 1949 to 1953. He worked in the private sector for three years before returning to the UI.
