Phage Typing Set for Differentiating Escherichia coli

M. Gershman, Cynthia E. Merrill and Jacqueline Hunter

Departments of Microbiology and Animal and Veterinary Sciences, University of Maine, Orono 04469

ABSTRACT

For comprehension of the relationship of various microorganisms to bovine mastitis, a phage typing system of 53 phages is described for characterizing Escherichia coli. This sensitive method expands the potential of current serological procedures by its ability to detect strains in what otherwise might be perceived as a homogeneous collection of cultures. In the investigation similar types were found in a number of diseased animals from different herds, suggesting that certain strains may be unique to mastitis.
