Bradford W. Berry, Research Food Technologist at the USDA Meat Science Research Laboratory, was the recipient of the 1980 Young Scientist Award sponsored by the Northeast Division ADSA and Northeast Section ASAS. He was born in Washington, DC on May 2, 1941. He received a BS in animal science in 1963 at Washington State University and an MS in meat science in 1965 at New Mexico State University. In 1972 he received a PhD in meat science with minors in biochemistry and statistics from Texas A&M University. His dissertation focused on defining characteristics of bovine muscle, cartilage, and bone as influenced by the physiological maturity of the slaughter animals.
His work experience includes that of instructor and junior animal scientist, Washington State University (1965–1970), associate professor, Animal Science Department, Colorado State University (1972–1977), and research food technologist with the Meat Science Research Laboratory, USDA (1977–present). In less than 3 yr with the Meat Science Research Laboratory, Berry has become involved in studies to provide the Agricultural Marketing Service and the Food Safety and Quality Service data for reevaluation of present standards and development of new standards for US grade and specifications for military and USDA purchase programs.
