Verner H. Nielsen retired from active service at the end of May, 1980. Verner has served Iowa State and the Iowa dairy industry for 48 continuous years except for a 1 yr leave of absence in the early 1940's to serve as production manager for the Falfurrias Creamery Company in Falfurrias, TX.
Verner started at Iowa State in 1932 as a cheesemaker, a job he held for 11 years. During this time he helped develop the method of manufacturing the Iowa Blue cheese and the Iowa Baby Swiss cheese.
At the same time, Verner also went to class and studied at Iowa State, receiving a B.S. degree in 1943 with majors in dairy industry and chemistry. He earned the highest grade point average of the 1943 class in the College of Agriculture. After 1 yr at the Falfurrias Creamery, Verner returned to Iowa State as an instructor in the Dairy Industry Department.
