Memorial—Cecil Branton

Cecil Branton, professor emeritus of dairy science, Louisiana State University, died April 5, 1980, at age 62.

Branton, a native of Shongaloo, Louisiana, received his B.S. degree from Louisiana State University in 1942 after which he taught vocational agriculture at Amite, Louisiana. In 1944 he joined the Department of Dairy Science, Louisiana State University, as a research assistant. He completed his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at Cornell University. He was appointed assistant professor of dairy science at Louisiana State University in 1947, associate professor in 1951, and professor in 1957. Because of failing health, Branton retired in 1976.

Branton is recognized internationally for his research on breeding systems for adaptability of dairy cattle to warm climate areas of the world. He served as advisor to the Ministries of Agriculture of the Phillippines, Venezuela, and Mexico in developing national breeding programs for dairy production.

He conducted classical experiments on the effect of the stressful summer climate of Louisiana and other subtropical areas on dairy cattle.
