Retirements...
W. Ray Murley, professor and Extension specialist in dairy nutrition at Virginia Tech retired August 29, 1980.
The Oklahoma native received his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees from Iowa State University. He was employed as Extension dairy specialist there before moving to North Carolina State University as professor of animal science.
Murley came to Virginia Tech in 1965 as diary Extension project leader and specialist. In addition to his duties in those areas, his Extension efforts have included research on the importance of forage testing, the need to feed dairy cattle a nutritionally balanced ration, and the complete ration concept. Many Virginia dairymen were exposed to these programs and benefited from them.
Murley worked closely with Extension agricultural engineers in developing improved calf-raising facilities and free-stall barns and with agricultural economists on milk marketing and farmer cooperatives.
His many accomplishments have been recognized with awards from the Virginia Feed Association (Distinguished Service Award), the American Dairy Science Association (Outstanding Extension Specialist Award and Award of Honor from the Southern Division of ADSA), and the Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (Outstanding Extension Specialist Award from Gamma Sigma Delta).
