Pricing Protein and Minimum Solids Standards

Carl E. Zurborg, Chief Executive

Mississippi Valley Milk Producers Association, Inc., Davenport, IA 52808

ABSTRACT

The author relates his firm's experience in component pricing since their entry into the field in 1973. Management was aware of the accuracy of testing for protein and the effect of feed on dairy farmers' herds from papers presented at meetings of the American Dairy Science Association.

Advantages to the industry of adopting protein compensation and raising minimum standards are reviewed. Economic signals are needed to encourage dairy farmers to produce higher solids milk to improve milk flavor, to increase manufacturing yields, and to reduce energy costs during processing.
