ABSTRACT
Current dairy industry needs for professionals are high according to the placement statistics for dairy science graduates in Ontario. The role of food science graduates in filling the gap between existing dairy positions and available graduates indicates good opportunity for dairy science majors. The future demand for professionals should be high when the current amalgamation of industrial plants, the demands of the consumer for accountability, and the lack of technical functions due to the "branch-plant" situation in Canada are considered. The dairy science education profile in Canada is not encouraging because of the tendency to de-emphasize dairying to present the total food picture in the new food science programs. Postgraduate education in Canada is weak due to competition for graduates by industry. This has resulted in problems of faculty recruitment at Canadian universities.
