Maximum Likelihood Estimates of Parameters of First and Second Lactation Milk Records

M. F. Rothschild1 and C. R. Henderson

Department of Animal Science, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853

ABSTRACT

Variance and covariance components, heritabilities, and genetic and phenotypic correlations between first and second lactation milk records were estimated by Maximum Likelihood procedures. Data consisted of 423,314 first records and 339,182 selected second records completed in over 160,000 herd-year-seasons from daughters of 1,873 Holstein sires. Heritabilities of first and second milk records were .41 and .35. Genetic and phenotypic correlations were .91 and .56. Computational practicality and bias in estimation by Maximum Likelihood are discussed.
