Innovations in Dairy Youth Programs in Mississippi

Gerald T. Taylor

Cooperative Extension Service, Mississippi State 39762

ABSTRACT

Extension workers working with people and programs are confronted daily with change. May people resist change as if it were the plague, yet changes in programs are necessary from time to time to meet the needs of clientele. Some changes do not always result in better programs, and this, in itself, makes one reluctant to change tried and tested methods which can cause programs to stay too long unchanged.

Mississippi had made some changes in programs that may seem drastic. However, these changes have resulted in better programs. Not only have they increased participation, which was the primary motive, but a secondary benefit also resulted a new zest and zeal for programs.

One of the major changes in programs involved revision of the classification breakdown of classes for junior dairy shows. For the past 40 yr, the traditional classes have been four heifer and four cow classes. With a reduction of dairymen each year, this resulted in a drop in numbers at all diary shows.
