The 4-H Dairy Program in Michigan

K. L. Lee1

Department of Dairy Science, Michigan State University, East Lansing 48824

ABSTRACT

Introduction

The Michigan 4-H dairy program involves over 2600 4-H members in various dairy project. The program is coordinated by the dairy 4-H youth specialist, who is employed fulltime in the Dairy Science Department and works closely with the state 4-H office. Recently the dairy youth specialist has begun to work in a joint effort with the poultry and livestock 4-H youth specialists. In this way a total animal science 4-H program will be developed. The specialists are responsible for particular species but also may pool their talents in wider-ranging activities.

During February the three animal science youth specialists conduct five regional leader workshops at varied locations in the state. The morning program is devoted to slide presentations by each specialist, highlighting the previous year's activities and previewing future events. A lunch is sponsored by organizations which have an interest in 4-H so that the only expenses incurred by the leaders are for transportation.
