Interest of Dairy Production and Technology Scientists in the International Dairy Federation

Walter L. Dunkley

Department of Food Science and Technology, University of California, Davis 95616

ABSTRACT

In the preceding two papers, Mr. Savage presented several reasons why dairy scientists should be interested in International Dairy Federation (IDF) and Mr. Sliter discussed pros and cons of US affiliation with IDF from the point of view of US industry and dairy producers. To minimize repetition, I will elaborate on interests of dairy scientists in IDF, partly by comparing selected features of IDF and ADSA.

All of you here are either members of American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) or are familiar with its purposes and activities. The IDF has purposes generally similar to those of ADSA, except that they are oriented toward the international dairy industry. As noted previously, the IDF was created to promote, through international cooperation, the solution of scientific, technical, and economic problems in the international dairy field. Because of the similarity of purposes of the two organizations, ADSA members and supporters have a common interest with professionals who are active in IDF.
